The Emerging Role Nobody Predicted: Agent Operations

Before DevOps became a recognized discipline, many organizations treated infrastructure management as a secondary responsibility. Before platform engineering emerged, few companies anticipated dedicated teams focused on developer experience and internal systems. Technology repeatedly creates new operational challenges, and those challenges often evolve into entirely new professions.

The rise of AI agents may be creating the next example.

Most discussions around AI focus on building agents. Far less attention is given to operating them. Yet as organizations begin deploying larger numbers of autonomous systems, new questions immediately emerge. Who monitors performance? Who manages permissions? Who investigates failures? Who optimizes workflows? Who ensures agents remain aligned with business objectives?

These responsibilities are beginning to form a distinct operational layer.

As AI systems become more capable, companies will need people who understand how agents interact with infrastructure, data sources, APIs, security controls, and business processes. Managing a single agent may be relatively simple. Managing dozens or hundreds operating simultaneously across an organization is a very different challenge.

This is particularly relevant for Web3 companies. Agents can already interact with wallets, protocols, data providers, governance systems, and on-chain applications. As autonomous participation grows, organizations will need professionals capable of overseeing increasingly complex ecosystems where software interacts with software.

The emerging term “AgentOps” is starting to appear in technical communities for precisely this reason. Similar to how DevOps focused on the operational challenges of software delivery, AgentOps focuses on the operational challenges of autonomous systems. While the discipline is still developing, the underlying need is becoming easier to identify.

Every major technological shift creates jobs that seem obvious in hindsight. The most interesting question may not be whether AgentOps becomes a real career path. It may be how quickly organizations realize they need it.
